Organization and use of the 3-5-2 system during attacking and defense. Starting Formation Three players in defense, five midfielders, two attackers, and a goalkeeper (see figure). Organization The defensive unit is organized with two players who mark the opposition's attackers (markers) and a sweeper. The midfield unit consists of two wingbacks and three central midfielders, who can organize themselves either in a line or with a defensive or an offensive midfield player. The two attackers are positioned well up the pitch and often function as a central and a floating striker. Attacking In the buildup of attacking play, the sweeper should normally make himself available for goalkeeper distribution. Using their positions, the two markers create space for the sweeper's forward pass and can also become passing options when their opponents try to pressure the player with the ball. A marker who wins the ball should usually pass it on quickly, to avoid the ball being won back in a dangerous area. It should either be played back to the goalkeeper or libero, or deep into the opposition's half. The two wingbacks should ensure width in the game, and their areas of functioning are in the 10-meter corridors between the sidelines and the playing area. During the buildup, one of them should often move down toward the defensive zone, to be in a position to start a buildup on the other side. Many teams use a standard buildup, begun via one wingback who tries to push the buildup forward to the halfway line. If the wingback is challenged, the ball is played back and then swiftly over to the other side, where a free space has been created for the other wingback. The most important aspects of the wingback's attacking role are seeking constantly to exploit the corridor area, so the opposition shifts defensive organization to one side; and in the breakthrough phase, coming up to the goal line and making a cross. A well-developed bit of teamwork with another midfielder, say, via overlap, can create effective breakthrough opportunities. Overlaps can also work with an attacker. The attackers should position themselves centrally in the center area and make diagonal runs out toward the sidelines according to the area where the buildup is based. In the three defenders' marking roles, it is essential that the two markers never compromise in their defense. They should be close to their direct opponents, who are not permitted the space to turn when the ball is played to them. In most situations, markers should concentrate on winning the ball immediately. With the sweeper behind them, the markers can allow themselves to concentrate on winning the ball. The system's value is the central defensive cover in front of the goal and the exploitation of a strengthened midfield area with regard to both attack and defense. At the same time, the system's weakness lies in the restricted defense, which often gives the opposition great opportunities to utilize the width in the defensive zone. Comments (3)

As does mine mate but we do quite well with it, suits our strenghths. The main thing u need to play the system is wingbacks who can exploit a defence. They need to be fit and be able to get beyond a defence and cross a ball or ur attacking options will be limited. They can also work back and defend creating a 5-3-2 at that point when required, that may be what is happening to your team,if they are being pushed back your team will basically become this formation which of course is very defensive. Strength is also that u can totally control the midfied area with ur 3 players in there. Usaually it means u hold one midfielder and 2 are released to help the attack, increasing options and can be hard for a defence to cover :-) |
